Skokie Lagoons Wildlife Refuge
Where is it?
The Skokie Lagoons is a premier destination for kayaking for those who live in
Chicago. It is a 30 minute drive from downtown, and is part of the Forest
Preserve District of Cook County. This site, physically resides in Glencoe
and Winnetka, Illinois. The bordering street to the south is Willow Road,
and on the North, it reaches the southern shores of the Chicago Botanical
Gardens.

History of the Lagoons
The Lagoons were developed by the Civilian Conservation Corp, back in the
1930's. With the land resisting development, by remaining to soggy to
build on, the Conservation Corps spent years developing the waterways and
islands we now all enjoy.
