CoPurpose
This course is designed for those who work, play, or live in
areas 30 minutes or more from regular Emergency Medical
Service (EMS) response. The course combines classroom
lecture, skills practice, and role-playing to teach the
response steps and treatment of injuries and illnesses in a
delayed-help situation. Learn to prioritize care and treat
injuries in the field and to plan and carry out transports
and evacuations. Participants will receive a Wilderness
First Aid certificate, which can serve as a First Aid
certificate if needed.
Prerequisites
None, although a minimum age of 15 is recommended due to the
serious subject matter

prevented in wilderness areas

Learn proper advance preparation for journeys into the
backcountry

Learn the Emergency Action Steps for First Aid Response, to

short distance transfer and evacuation techniques

Experience providing wilderness first aid through the means
of scenarios and simulated rescues
What else?
Orientation and survival technique topics are not covered in
this course; however, a CPR course is highly recommended
before or after participation in the Wilderness First Aid
course. CPR skills will NOT be taught during the course,
although some preliminary victim recognition and assessment
skills will be discussed
Many of the first aid techniques discussed in this course
should be used only as a last resort, and not in urban
settings when EMS is available within minutes

Products/Materials
Participants will receive a Wilderness First Aid participant
manual, When Help Is Delayed Book, and a pocket-sized copy
of Mountaineering First Aid: A Guide to Accident Response
and First Aid Care as part of the course.

Hours 16 hours, including breaks
To help ensure an enjoyable
and successful experience:
• Dress comfortably; some skills are practiced on the floor in a
kneeling position.
• Please arrive on time, no admittance is permitted 15 minutes after
the start of the class.
• Bring a pen/pencil and reading glasses if necessary.
• A lunch break will be provided for classes that are all in one
day. You may need to bring a lunch, since restaurants may not be
conveniently located to all class locations.
• All necessary course materials will be provided during class.
• Practice sessions can be physically demanding. If you have any
questions about your ability to participate, consult with your
Health Care Provider prior to the course. If there are any special
needs that the instructor should know about, please call
1-800-337-2338. Please be aware you must be able to get on the floor
for the Checking the Unconscious Victim skill.
Course Certification
Payment of the course fee is not a guarantee of certification. Your
Wilderness First Aid certificate is valid for 3 years. To be
eligible for course certification you must:
• Be present for the entire course.
• Successfully complete all required skills.
• Pass a 50-question multiple choice written exam with a score of
80% or better (40 correct answers).
