by
Marjory Stoneman Douglas – An autobiography
Totch
by
Loren “Totch” Brown-
autobiography of one of the most well known residents of
the 10,000 islands area. Totch and his family are among
the original settlers of the area. This book is filled
with history, compelling stories, and how one man, made
his living in this daunting environment.
Liquid Land
– by Ted Levin – has some awesome descriptions of
the area where we will be. Discusses the Glades, and
some of the politics that surround it too.
Tales of Old Florida
– Castle – A collection of stories and pictures
from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. See Florida
how it used to be.
A Brief History of the Everglades City Area by
Marya Repko– for those history buffs – a short but
interesting book.
Across the Everglades
– Hugh Willoughby – two men and a canoe scout the
Everglades in 1898. Has interesting photos, a hand
drawn map and many translations of Seminole Vocabulary
Everglades Wildguide
– National Park Handbook – Handbook 143 – A small
book with an incredible amount of information on the
ecosystem of the Everglades. A must have!
Florida’s Fabulous Trees-
W. Williams –there is a whole collection of these
large, well illustrated books. Topics such as trees,
mammals, reptiles, birds, etc. They are all excellent!
Killing Mr. Watson-
Peter Matthiessen- A fictional novel based on
historical fact. The 10 day Wilderness Waterway trip we
do visits many places mentioned in this book!
Swamp Screamer- Charles Fergus-Chronicles
the plight of the Florida Panther – you will be driving
by the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuges for
some trips and there may be opportunities to hike here!
